Durum Field Talk
Ryegrass biggest challenge. Trifuralin doesn't work,  boxergold causing 20% biomass reduction last yr & sakura not reg & unlikely to be due to too much crop effect. Agronomic trial site looking at different practices - seeding rate.

MId North High Rainfall crop walk at Trial Site pH 7-8.5 & increases at depth.
Canola - struggling to get over 2.5 tons. Match inputs to yield, no point growing 6 ton biomass prior to flowering when a 4 ton biomass is more than sufficient for 2.5 tons.
Can sow too early - chilling effect at flowering & no seed.
Herbicide crop effect demo over different crops
PGR's having mixed results, mainly dissapointing - is timing an issue?

13 years no-till with modified JD disc. Opti-crop principles. Follow Phil Needleham's (international no-till guru based USA) work & regularly update/improve their seeding system. Sow wheat on 6" & canola on 12". Grow wheat, wheat, canola. Boxer gold early post-emergent on first yr wheat & Sakura PSPE  2nd year wheat. Trifuralin a waste of time - high resistance. single rate flufol at sowing, opus gs.31 & either a tebucinazole or a stroby at gs.39. 100% ground cover at sowing because use stripper header front.
Group b resistant mustard in CL canola. Now moving to hybrid TT 559.  Yields generally 2-2.5 ton/ha. Craig - 80% yield in cabbage. Sow 2 kg/ha. Beans yield 3.5-4.5 tons. Need well structured soils like clays. Paddock has nearly finished flowering, drying out. Podding only 40cm on main stem. used edge, seen some crop  effect PSPE with heavy rain - may not use next year.
Wheat 4 ton plus. Grow a lot of Mace & mace on mace. Mace paddock by sheds dry sown18 April, rain 22nd. frost risk is zero. 420 kg urea & SOA applied for season. 295 GSR to date. Yellow leaf spot pressure very high. Crop at milky dough. New variety to try is Cobra - looks very flashy.
Soils are neutral to alkaline. land prices $3000/acre
Would like to get a precision planter in the future for hybrid canola & reduce sowing rates to sub kilogram.

Johnstone Export Hay. Kapunda

Business operating for 90 years, 4th generation now. Started exporting in 1963. Business is predimnately export, some domestic sales in dry years. Export hay to Singapore, Korea & Japan for dairy cattle & race horses. Horsham  & Kapunda factory  annual output is 140,000 tons oaten hay & 150,000 tons straw. The adjoining pellet factory is 15,000 tons. pellets made of straw, grain & mineral additives. Bagging machine 10 pallets hr, most bus is bulk. Make 9mm (70% business) & 6 mm pellets. Aim to make as much feed as they can for countries that can't make their own roughage.
Factory plant works around the clock with 4 hours for preventative mainenetance. Hay is inloaded 7am - 3pm daily (3 men) Don't store much on-site. X-ray machines pick up any foreign material like animal carcase, large sticks, bits of metal from machinery etc.
Bales generally 700kg, put onto automated processing plant to compact bales for shipment . compressed into 25kg butts, 5 to a 125kg log. Easy for end users to purchase small quantites as required. Into factory probably average about $200/ton. Sells in Japan for about $600/ton. 4 men operate the bale compression plant each shift.

Ben Shanahan Freeling

425 mm rainfall at Templers, farming about 2500 ha. Employs 2 men. 12 inches annual last year. 80% area mace wheat. 72 mm August & 240 GSR? Mace on mace 110kg/ha. Faba beans fiesta
paddock down the road of Kord wheat - yellows genetic
Lease $130-160/acre

Peter Botsalis

Y Botsalis.
He worked with Bayer to get Sakura registered as quickly as quickly as possible. Condust random herbicide surveys 2005-2012 with a focus on a district each year. (GRDC funded) 2011 was NE Vic. Going back a second time to districts starting to see changes. Plant out seeds collected from surveys & do herbicide tests the following year. Trifuluralin resistance in SA is very high. NE VIC didn't change a lot but increase glean resistance. Over a 5 yr period west VIC saw a 17-fold increase. Also 16% resistance to glyphosate in west VIC.
Custom made application unit for applying herbicides. Fully enclosed & automated.
New canola chemistry being tested pre & post application, available in other countries (Europe?) Good pre & post on susceptible & resistant ryegrass. Some crop effect on canola pre-emergent application
Travel north out of the city for 90 minutes through Gawler, Freeling, Kapunda to Marrabel.

Seeder DBS 10" spacing for plant competition for ryegrass suppression
Changes the depth of knife blade under the seed for different crops.  Breaking up cultivation hard pans.
4" under oats, 8 " under cereals and 2" under canola at seeding time.

VRT Lime and Gypsum. Soil pH ranges from different soil types. 4.2 - 7.0 pH

Kym has is own soil testing pH lab. Sample 15 spots per Hectare.

1200 ha crop & 500 ha oaten hay. Aim to produce 4-5000 tons grain & same in hay. No summer rain usually. Spread over 50km & GSR about 350mm? Undulating country. Uses DBS on 10" spacing for hay. pH ranges from 4.2 to 7. High attention to detail & believes in the benefits of variable rate technology for their highly variable soil types. Measure biomass to VR apply nitrogen. Canola hates waterlogging & loves nitrogen.  Waterlogging areas receive 500kg urea (7% pdk) grow garnet & aim for 3.5 tons across the paddock. Without VR nitrogen wheat ranges from 1 ton to 6 ton /ha.
4 ton average country. Market price for land is $4000/ac in 80 acre block. Have a auto-rock picker machine, 300 ton year.

Peter Botsalis resistance testing from quick test.

Moderate to high resistance through SA cropping region with ryegrass, brome grass, wild oats and wild mustard .
Annual ryegrass trifluralin resistance populations @ 50 - 75% in most cropping districts.

Random surveys of ryegrass throughout cropping regions have glyphosate resistance @ 15%. These surveys do not include fence lines.

In the SE of SA, ryegrass populations resistance to all chemical groups , glyphosate @ 30%

Screening new pre emergent herbicide for ryegrass in canola, new chemical group. Release 3- 5 years.
